General U.S.PTO Statistics of Chemical Patents

Chemical firms, big or small, routinely patent chemical innovations. For instance, Bayer has 10,582 granted chemical patents followed by DuPont with 9083 granted patents:

Even companies such as Texas Instruments and Motorola Inc., who may not be perceived to be strongly chemistry oriented, hold about 2236 and 1892 chemical related patents, respectively.

Approximately 803,630 chemical patents have already been granted by the US patent office until December 31, 2004 and about 35,000 new patents are issued every year.

Chemical patents are granted over a wide range of sub disciplines. For instance, there are about 14,000 organic synthesis patents, 1332 carbohydrate chemistry patents, 1348 structural biology patents, 15358 chemical analysis patents, 1538 computationally aided molecular design patents, 908 chemical element discovery patents, 1241 nanotechnology patents and 15 space chemistry patents. That’s a lot of patents!

General U.S.PTO Statistics of Mechanical Patents
Mechanical patents were the earliest class of patents filed and include everything from the smallest fasteners to the largest industrial machines. Mechanical patents have the largest number of granted patents compared to any other patent class.

The U.S. Patent And Trademark Office has granted approximately 1,201,284 mechanical patents until December 31, 2004 and about 60,000 mechanical patents are filed and granted each year. That’s a lot of patents! (The above numbers are approximate and obviously increase over time)
